It all started when we saw two slime blobs twisting around each other, hanging in a long slimy thread on the wall. What was this?
It looked like two Great Gey slugs, or as they are also called Leopard slugs - Limax maximus in latin. It is a slug belonging to the family keeled slugs. It is caracterized by its speckled coloring black, gray and white.
The slug counts as one of the largest slugs in the world and can reach 8 inches.
The slug is not an indigenous Swedish species but has been brought here by humans from Central Europe. But unlike the Spanish slug (called "Killer slug" in Sweden), it does no damage in the garden!
The slug is culture bound and is found mainly in gardens, parks and cemeteries.
They twirled around each other.
Then something white started to emerge fron one of the slugs...
Is it giving birth to a baby slug?
The "larvae" gets longer and longer.
Det vita röret viftar fram och tillbaka som om det levde ett eget liv. De två sniglarna var nu tämligen stilla. //
The white tube is wagging back and forth like it had a life of its own. The two slugs were now motionless.
What the...! A second white "larvae" started to emerge fron the second slug.
De vita "larverna" blir längre och längre. Det är alltså penisar!
Det är alltså två Leopardsniglar som parar sig - på ett för sniglar väldigt annorlunda sätt.
The white "larvaes" grows longer and longer. They are in fact penises.
It is in fact two Leopard slugs mating - for slugs in an unusual way.
It looked like they contained something.... They started moving back and forth.
The two slugs hanging on the wall.
So the penises found each other and strated twirling around each other.
They spun and spun and started changing form.
The slugs are motionless - only their penises moving.
The penises are now all intertwined and start to shorten up.
You can see the semen packets in each end of the penises.
The penises change form and start looking like bells or umbrellas.
I den klockformade nedre delen utväxlar de spermapaket. //
In the bellformed lower part they exchange the semen packets.
The slugs are hermaphrodites, that is, being or gaving both sexes.
The "copulation" occurs usually at night.
"Changed is changed and will never return."
The penises start to untwirl.
And are being withdrawn back into the slugs (the heads to be exact).
It took longer for the penises to appear than it did for them to withdraw.
The slugs started to move and untwirl.
Here they are, hanging from the wall. They hang in a thing mucus thread that is attached to the wall.
Så börjar den ena snigeln krypa iväg. //
The one of the slugs start to creep away.
It turns out just one of the slugs was attached to the thread.
The one attached to the thread starts making its way up the thread while the other one starts mowing away. "Don't call me - I'll call you!"
It starts eating its way up the thread.
One is eating its way up the thread and the other one has now stopped and it looks like it is grooming itself.
One slug is larger and heavier than the other.
One slug is still eating the mucus thread.
The slug eating the thread has turned around and is coming back down again. The slug that seemingly left the arena turned around and came back and is now starting to eat what is left of the thread.
Why are they eating the mucus thread? Not to miss out on nutricious food?
They eventually meet again and the slug that first left, moves out of the way. Is it younger maybe? It is never the less the smaller one in size.
The house wall. Both are now heading down.
Well, thats what we thought but then the smaller slug turns and mowes around the corner and starts creeping up the wall again. De other slug is just behind.
So why is one of the slugs (the larger one, the one attached to the thread) following the other slug?
The creep up the wall again but then the first slug turns around and creeps around the corner again.
It creeps back to the mucus thread and starts eating what remains. Was this all some kind of battle over who gets to eat the leftovers?
It eats away fast and the thread gets shorter and shorter.
After this both slugs left and we humans went to bed. Thanks for the interesting show!
EN MYCKET HÄFTIG UPPLEVELSE!
A VERY AWESOME EXPERIENCE!
